Mindfulness is not a niche and hard to achieve state, but a simple practice of being present in the moment and being conscious. It’s about paying attention to the most basic activities of our day to day life. As they say, the beauty lies in details! On an average day, our experience of life is absolutely absent minded. While we are walking, in our minds we might be re-living the tussle with a colleague. We may cross a rose plant bearing little rose buds, yet due to our absent mindedness, we usually completely miss to notice that the buds have bloomed into beautiful flowers and are spreading lovely fragrance too.
At Cottage Nirvana we practice mindfulness by keeping things very simple. Try and feel the weight of the newspaper, feel the temperature of your skin, taste the drink with or without lemon in it, feel the pressure that your feet exert on the earth and etc.
We ask people to hold a fruit in their hand, feel the same and observe the colour and the shades of the fruits, gauge the weight of the same, imagine how beautiful it would have looked when hanging on a tree before it ripened to fall to the ground. After gathering these details, start eating the fruit slowly and chew it nicely feel the juice drool over the palate and change the taste of the mouth. With these simple exercises, people have started appreciating the fruits more and embarked a journey towards mindfulness.
Such specs of beauty lie all around us but unfortunately, we do not gather them, as we are absent minded. General human tendency is to hoard a heap of negative thoughts and keep repeating them. Imagine that you come across one dreadful thought but you have a sack full of positive ones stored too, the chances of the negative one getting swiped off really enhances.
Eventually Mindfulness helps us to lead a qualitative and more fulfilling life and we are able to handle our relationships with everything better.
